SAM Extrusion, Solution Coating Labs Expand Capabilities, Trials
SAM North America's extrusion pilot line, located outside of Syracuse,
NY, continues to support both customers and suppliers, as well as provide for
internal research and development.
As a result of an increase in requests for extrusion coating on paperboard, SAM
North America recently upgraded its pilot extrusion-coating line with increased
tension capabilities. With this upgrade, the line now handles heavier product,
up to 18-pt board. This coupled with a new Flynn Flame Treater and Nordson EDI
UltraFlow V Feedblockwith Multilayer Technology (LMT) make an ideal combination
for development trials.
At the lab, there is continued interest in evaluating ozone application as well
as chemical pre-coating options. With ongoing attention in LMT, five
arrangement options for different structure combinations are available. In
2017, edge encapsulation with or without coextrusion will be added.
The SAM Solution Coating Lab (above), located at the company's headquarters in South Korea, is
home to a state-of-the-art solution coating pilot line. Successful trials to
date have included high-speed, automatic unwinding and winding to 1,000 mpm,
thin-film microgravure coating, solvent-based coatings of high-tech materials,
slot-die coating, and evaluations of flotation and roll-support drying
techniques.
