PictureKaukauna, WI-based Expera Coated Products has installed a new high-tech coating line from SAM North America at its facility in Rhinelander, WI. The line, which went into commercial production in October 2017, primarily converts highly engineered release liners for advanced composite, medical and tape markets.

Using learnings from supplying key end-use applications, Expera applied this knowledge to create a state-of-the-art coater that provides a much-needed increment of capacity to the business to support customer growth, Expera says.

The machine applies  one- or two-sided silicone coating. The current cartridge-coating stations are designed to accommodate a broad range of future coating methods. Paper, poly-coated paper, and film webs of 40 to 80 in. wide can be run at speeds in excess of 1,000 fpm. SAM North America engineered, built and assembled the machine in South Korea. It was run on the SAM shop floor prior to shipping to Expera.

The new coater is a significant investment in the Rhinelander (WI) community and supports the manufacturing infrastructure in the region. Additionally important for the community, the additional equipment supports the local Expera Rhinelander Paper Mill by consuming significant additional base paper produced by the Rhinelander mill. This project provides new family-supporting manufacturing jobs in the community and increases the local property tax base by occupying a previous vacant building, Expera says.

“We are very excited about this next step for Expera,” says Harry Challender, VP-Expera Coated Products. “The design of the coater brings us a new level of flexibility and efficiency. Locating the coater in a new facility in Rhinelander ensures that we can leverage the expertise that already exists at our current facility. The new line’s unique capabilities will allow us to continue to develop tailored solutions for our customers. Overall Expera is especially pleased with the design, performance, and support from SAM."

“It has been a pleasure working with the Expera team,” adds Don Teich, VP Sales-SAM North America. “Expera included their team in the procurement, engineering, testing and acceptance processes, which resulted in a very successful installation and startup.”

Expera Specialty Solutions is North America’s largest specialty-paper manufacturer. Headquartered in Wisconsin, it operates four Wisconsin paper mills in Kaukauna, Mosinee, De Pere, and Rhinelander.
